Easy Self-Care Tips to Reduce Stress

Self-care is the practice of listening to what you need to be happy and fulfilling that need with loving-kindness. It's also the foundation of self-love and acceptance. Most people will tell you that they do not practice self-care because they are too busy. Unfortunately, societal demands do not often leave us time to spare between managing our careers, families, and social lives.

However, self-care is a valuable technique for reducing stress. Stress symptoms include insomnia, anxiety, irritability, and fatigue. According to the American Psychological Association, three out of every four Americans have experienced at least one symptom of stress in the past month. While it's normal to feel stressed out from time to time, chronic stress can be dangerous to your health.

Easy Self-Care Tips To Reduce Stress

Self-care doesn't have to mean taking a whole day off to go to the spa or spending money on a beach vacation. Instead, you can reduce stress quickly by incorporating some of the following easy self-care tips into your everyday routine.

1. Stop Drinking Caffeine

Caffeinated beverages like coffee stimulate your body’s fight-or-flight response, making you feel jittery and nervous. One of the most common symptoms of stress is anxiety. When you are anxious, the caffeine jitters will only make it worse.

If you are often stressed out or anxious, you may want to cut out caffeine or at least reduce your caffeine intake. Try drinking decaf coffee or green tea as you break out of your caffeine habit.

2. Breathe Deeply

Taking deep, slow breaths stimulates the vagus nerve, which activates the parasympathetic nervous system. The parasympathetic system is our rest-and-digest system and is only active when we are relaxed and at ease.

Deep breathing is something you can do anywhere, anytime. As we breathe, our heart rate slows down, and we can think more clearly. This self-care tip is helpful in response to stress, but it can also prevent anxiety from overwhelming us when we need to be present.

3. Take a Bath

Most people would never consider taking time out of their busy schedules to take a bath. Showers are much more efficient and accomplish the same goal. But a hot bath is a luxuriously easy act of self-care that reduces stress and anxiety. Submerging in water also reduces pain and calms the nervous system.

If you want to give your body a little extra love, add Epsom salts and stress-relieving aromatherapy products such as lavender, chamomile, and orange to the hot water. Soak and enjoy!

4. Get a Massage

Everyone appreciates a little touch therapy now and again. However, most people don’t know that you don’t need a professional massage to experience the stress-relieving benefits of massage.

A study on the effects of massage on stress found that even a short 10-minute massage can improve both physiological and psychological relaxation. Overall, massage activates the parasympathetic nervous system and calms you down.

5. Go For a Walk

Exercise triggers the release of endorphins, brain chemicals responsible for helping us relax and improve our mood. Walking is an easy and accessible activity that can reduce stress. Even a slow, comfortable pace will do.

Walking for stress relief is especially effective if you incorporate a walking meditation that pulls your mind away from whatever is stressing you out and focuses your mind entirely on the task at hand.

 6. Take Time Away From Social Media

Social media is an addiction that many of us would happily live without, but it's also an inextricable part of modern-day life. Businesses promote their deals and specials, friends use it to communicate, and families use it to keep their relatives up to date on their lives.

However, the longer you scroll, the more stressed out you become. Taking a short break from social media, even if it's just for the weekend, can help you get a little perspective and give you time to make other healthy self-care habits.

 7. Practice Mindfulness

Mindfulness is an easy practice that you can do at any point during the day. It involves being present and aware of the moment. For example, you can practice mindfulness as you do the dishes, brush your teeth, eat your breakfast, or take a walk.

You simply have to focus all of your attention on the task at hand and accept whatever thoughts or feelings come up as you do so. It draws your attention away from obsessive thoughts and is especially effective at treating anxiety, stress, and depression.

8. Read a Book

A 2009 study found that reading reduces stress levels by 68%. It relaxes your muscles and lowers your heart rate. However, reading for stress relief only works if you are reading for pleasure.

Textbooks for school, documents for your job, and news articles might only stress you out more. Instead, choose a topic or genre that you love and settle yourself for an hour or so of escape into the world of fiction.

9. Get Out in Nature

A 20-minute walk through nature, or even looking at nature scenes, is an effective way to lower the body's stress hormones levels. Getting out in nature removes you from whatever situation is causing you stress and calms you down. It also reduces feelings of fear and anger and lowers your heart rate, blood pressure, and muscle tension.

So, take a break, get out among the trees, look at the ocean, and breathe the fresh air.

The Journey of Self-Care

As you start your self-care journey, try to choose easily incorporated practices into your daily life. You should also take stock of where you are when you are stressed out to help you identify the cause of your stress. Once you've identified where your stress is coming from, you will be better equipped to address the results.
