Wellness often feels like a personal pursuit. After all, you are ultimately responsible for your health. But considering the pandemic and everything that's happened in the past couple of years, it seems appropriate to ask how you can improve peoples' health and well-being worldwide.
April 7th was World Health Day, but don’t limit yourself to celebrating on just one day – celebrate through the whole month of April!
World Health Day is a global holiday that celebrates the founding of the World Health Organization and promotes global health awareness. The theme of this year's celebration is Our Planet, Our Health. Health is a basic human right. In an ideal world, everyone would have equal access to the resources they need to build healthy lives. Local and national officials would work together to provide them to communities worldwide.
Unfortunately, community health is often low on their list of priorities. So, to celebrate World Health Day this year, focus on how you can enhance the health of your community.

How to Celebrate World Health Day 2022 This April

Community-wide health could involve increasing access to healthy foods, group exercise, and mindfulness education. With the right resources, you can create lasting wellness for yourself and the people of your community as well.

1. Evaluate Local Healthy Food Options

Each year, 2.8 million people die due to being overweight or obese. Obesity has been linked to chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer, and several autoimmune disorders. Since obesity is generally caused by eating too many calories, a balanced diet is crucial for health and wellness.
Access to healthy food plays a crucial role in whether someone becomes overweight. Unfortunately, in low-income or minority communities, affordable healthy food options are often scarce. In the absence of healthy foods, people in these communities will opt for the easiest option. These might include fast-food chains or grocery stores that carry foods with a high-calorie density and low price point.

Studies show that people in relationships also sleep better when sleeping next to a person they love. According to one study, both sleep quality and length improved while sleeping next to a partner.

As you celebrate World Health Day this year, search out some healthy food options near you. You can start by searching small, local food vendors or checking out a nearby farmer's market.

Suppose you are ready to make changes on a larger scale. In that case, you could petition your local grocery store to carry more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Or contact your local officials to see what they can do to increase access to healthy foods in your community.
While your diet choices are ultimately your own, community access to wholesome foods helps you make healthier decisions.

2.  Attend a Community Fitness Event

Exercise is another cornerstone of wellness. Unfortunately, only about 20% of people exercise enough to meet the minimum requirements for optimal health. A few of the reasons people give for not exercising include lack of time, motivation, and energy.
When we are kids, team sports and gym class push us to exercise in groups. Some people continue to pursue sports as they get older, but most will get too caught up in their job, education, family, and social life to focus on fitness.
Community fitness improves motivation, adds purpose, and even increases intensity. People who exercise in a group are more likely to show up on time and have a more positive attitude toward exercise. In addition, you can socialize with family and friends as you burn off calories.
An easy way to encourage community wellness is by attending or organizing an event that celebrates fitness. Start an adult league if you loved a group sport as a kid. Adult soccer, baseball, and basketball teams are pretty popular and may exist somewhere near you. Or maybe you want to motivate your friends and coworkers to break their routine. You could try signing up for a 5K and going on runs together to train for the race.
As you search out community fitness events, get creative! People forget that they are exercising when they work out in a group. Find what works for you and get moving for your health.

3. Make Mindfulness Accessible

Mindfulness is the act of being present in the moment. You let go of judgment and attachment in exchange for kindness, acceptance, love, and compassion.
In today's fast-paced world, people get caught up in their own lives. They are focused on a career, gunning for a promotion at any cost. Or maybe their focus is on the home, raising the next generation, and building a life with their partner. Whatever their goals, they always push forward and focus on the future.
Even if you aren’t living in your ideal house with a perfect yard and access to all the best restaurants, shops, and shows, mindfulness allows you to let go of that perfect picture and live in the moment.
Community mindfulness allows you to be present in the town, city, or state that you are currently living in. It helps you accept your neighbors and quickly resolve conflicts when they arise. It strengthens relationships and builds a feeling of interconnectedness.
While popular in yoga studios and other mind-body practices, mindfulness education is lacking on a community level. However, you can promote mindfulness in your community by organizing a community yoga or tai chi class.
You can also pay attention to how you treat your neighbors. If you see the same person at the grocery store every time you go, strike up a conversation. Get to know your neighbors by bringing over some cookies or engaging them in conversation the next time they walk their dog past your house. Let go of any judgments and try to see the beauty of your area.
